Fitting In
Senior transfer Lane Harris earns Monarchs starting quarterback job.
Moving to a new school can be a very tough and very difficult experience.
Attempting to become starting quarterback on the varsity football team in your first couple of months on school ground could also be hard.
But one of the Monarchs’ newest football stars has been able to overcome both of these challenges.
Senior Lane Harris was named the Monarchs starting quarterback after transferring from rival school Papillion–La Vista South. While this alone is an amazing accomplishment, he isn’t ready to settle.
Usually you transfer schools due to your parents getting a new job or house; this was not the case for Harris.
“I grew up and played baseball with a bunch of kids who go here,” Harris said. “For my senior year, I wanted to play with them one last time.”
Reuniting with past friends really made it easy for Harris to adjust to the new school.
“The people that go to school here really made it easy,” Harris said. “They let me join and fit in.”
After just a couple of months of practice, Harris won a heated competition for the starting quarterback on the varsity football team, beating out sophomore Kyle Ingwerson and junior Seth Obermeyer.
“It was a challenge,” Harris said. “Seth Obermeyer put in a lot of work over the summer and Kyle Ingwerson just has a lot of natural talent, which made it very difficult.”
Harris isn’t the only new Monarch. Head coach Tim Williams is also starting his first year on the football team. Both are ready to make a change for the Monarchs.
“Coach Williams has made learning the offense very simple,” Harris said. “Practice day by day he just explains it a little bit more.”
In his short time on the team, Harris has earned his fellow teammates respect as the new face of the offense.
“He’s a really good teammate,” senior lineman Ben Haynes said. “He has a lot of good field command.”
While there is a grueling football season ahead of the team, Harris is looking forward to playing at his highest level.
“My goal is to have a winning, successful season,” Harris said. “Also to have a great time with my team.”
With Papio making the state playoffs last year, both Harris and the team are ready to do it again.
“The team is really big, really fast, and I think we’re going to have a really great year,” Harris said.
With winning the starting quarterback job, the new kid on campus has a lot of responsibility, but Harris is ready to make his mark for the maroon and white.
