The sizzle of the grill. The crack of an egg. The chatter from the classroom. Just for one simple dish.
Taught by Ms. Audrey Jarvis, Nutrition and Foods I teaches students how to prepare food, as well as the safety behind the ingredients and tools used.
Ms. Jarvis introduces students to the world of cooking, while finding ways to entertain the class and keep them interested.
“I really like my teacher,” sophomore Chloe Seaton said. “She is clear on the instructions and she makes class really fun.”
Not just spending the whole time in the kitchen, students also rely on classroom time to fully learn about what food has to offer.
“So far we’ve learned about the benefits of an egg, different diseases from certain food groups, and how to prepare food safely,” sophomore Alyssa Rojas said.
Students use their classroom knowledge in the kitchen constantly. Curating their dishes is not an easy task if they don’t have prior knowledge.
“You really have to pay attention to words and instructions to make sure you’ve measured correctly,” Seaton said.
Only spending 50 minutes in the kitchen is not always a long enough time to cook. Usually squeezing in the final touches at the bell rings, it adds a taste of excitement to the day.
“I really wish we had more time to cook,” Seaton said, “Usually we get done right as the bell is ringing. It’s one of my favorite classes; I wish I could enjoy it more.”
Being an elective, the students have chosen to be in Foods class. Most of the students have a positive attitude towards cooking, and make it a nice environment to prepare food in.
“The people are really nice, “ Seaton said. “I don’t have a problem with any of them. I’ve actually made a lot of friends from being in that class.”
Learning lessons and preventing injury is the biggest part of the class. Students have to make sure to take their time and be precise when measuring or working with sharp objects. The lessons learned are remembered in every aspect of life, not just the classroom.
“You just have to make the best of every moment,” Rojas said “It will become a memory sooner or later.”
Nutrition and Foods I may just be a basic introductory class. But it allows students to take a step into the world of cooking and allow themselves to truly enjoy the experiences handed to them.
