On Friday, April 19th, the top six players of the girls varsity tennis team traveled to Woods tennis center in Lincoln to participate in the annual Fremont invitational. The team as a whole earned enough points to score a second place finish out of nine teams in the metro.
Not only did the team do good, but there were many individual victories as well. Senior July Moser, the one singles for PLHS, went undefeated through the day and earned first place.
“I played well in the first three matches and I think I played really good in my last match,” Moser said. “I had some strong serves and was confident with my strokes.”
At the varsity level, invitationals include each teams one and two ranked singles and doubles. Senior Ellie Farhenkrog alongside her doubles partner Mia Tvrdy battled through to earn second place.
“Mia and I played great in our first and second matches although I felt that it wasn’t evenly matched,” Farhenkrog said. “We started off the first match down 0-4 but Mia played amazing and was able to shut them down at the net.”
The talented two doubles played Central, Lincoln High, Lincoln Southeast, and Fremont to lead them to a 3-1 record on the day.
This team not only rallied for themselves individually, but also for each other as a tight knit team.
“I think my teammates did a great job and put a lot of effort in their matches,” Moser said. “I enjoyed watching them.”
Although this team has seen a lot of improvement and success early on in the season, they are determined to take their talents to new heights.
“We have metros soon, and then we are all working towards the state tournament,” Moser said. “Also our duals prepare us for state because we play matches against players that we might potentially see at state.”
With a shared common goal in mind, the PLHS girls tennis team is on the track to victory.
“We are preparing for the dual state tournament in Kearney by getting as many quality reps in in practice and working hard to zone in on skills to adapt to teams that we have struggled playing in the past.” Farhenkrog said.
