The senior barbeque is a long lasting tradition at monarch high. Every year, to celebrate the seniors last day of school, a barbeque is held in the north gym featuring live attractions, raffle prizes, and of course Posa’s hand grilled hotdogs and hamburgers. Most years, some seniors have to miss out on the event due to AP testing falling on their last day.
This year, AP psychology students in Mr. Brown’s class were the students who had to stress over the decision to either attend their last celebration with their graduating class or take a college level exam. Of course, Mr. Brown still encouraged his students to take the AP exam, resulting in about 45 seniors missing the barbeque.
To make sure the seniors wouldn’t completely miss out, Mr. Brown took matters into his own hands and had food set aside to grill for his seniors after they finished their exam.
“The kids were very appreciative,” Brown said. “Unfortunately the barbeque was cleared out by the time they arrived but we sat and talked and had a good time.”
Even though the students missed the live magic show and the raffle drawing of full size televisions, they got to make memories in a smaller, more intimate setting.
“Someone connected their phone to the bluetooth speaker in the gym and a few even jumped on the bouncy house that hadn’t been picked up yet,” Brown said.
The lucky seniors not only got a chance at college credit, but they also got to feel included and cared for as someone took the time to make sure they could have a special send off.
“It was a wonderful final memory for me with those students before they left highschool,” Brown said.
