Finding out the theme for a show never loses its hype among excited performers. In past years, PLHS’s shows have always been more “character-themed.” However, this year the two groups, Heart and Soul and Free Spirit, have now picked themes that that no one was able to guess.
Not only are family and friends excited and interested in watching the shows, but the performers and directors are excited too.
“I’m excited for a lot of things about the shows,” Ussery said. “Just being there from the beginning is the biggest aspect of it.”
Even Heart and Soul’s new, odd theme has the cast of girls excited.
“I’m really excited for this year’s show choir. I think we have really good shows all around this year and good people this year,” Lexi Novotny said.
This year’s themes for the show choir took a lot of creativity to think of, especially Free Spirit’s new story-line.
“I was brainstorming lots of things, but the movie Holes came to my brain,” Ussery said. “So I took some of the themes from Holes.”
It is weird to think of a show choir theme being show choir itself. However, Heart and Soul has been finding a way to make it work really well. The songs, dances and costumes bring the theme to life.
“I love the theme,” Novotny said. “I think it’s better and more straightforward than my last two years.”
Looking back at some of the other shows that performed from different schools, there was a possibility that they could have influenced this year’s pick on themes.
“For me it didn’t totally influence this year,” Ussery said. “Other schools I’ve worked with have had more of a story, but it’s kind of a trend now.”
For Heart and Soul, it has mostly been a theme that was quirky or different from the rest.
“I think in ways you could say it was influenced, but Heart and Soul has always done the out-of-the-box things,” Novotny said. “This year we’re hitting right at that level of ‘it’s a good weird.’”
The new themes for the show choir groups are going to result in one heck of a year. Heart and Soul is goofy and unexpected, while Free Spirit has a thrilling story that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
