Our place in the world right now would seem to be in an uncertain path, A.I. is evolving quickly, and its place in society could change the opportunities for many individuals in the modern era. How would A.I. upend the lives, events, and careers for those here at PLHS?
A.I. could be a fear for some students here at PLHS, or just a nuisance for others. Do people here know the dangers of A.I.? But do they not believe it will be a threat like it is shown in our culture?
“I see A.I. used as a tool to help people with basic questions,” freshman Vincent Svoboda said “It could be used for Google Searches, making life easier.”
A.I. might be generalized in an unlikeable fashion in our pop culture, but not everyone sees A.I. for the bad it can do. Some people see A.I. as not only a useful tool, but a tool that can solve problems we have only just begun to discover.
“I think A.I. is a very useful tool for our recent problems,” freshman Cohen Woodward said, “it can do things no human can do to solve problems.”
A.I. can solve problems that humans can’t solve, such as trying to do something about our changing climate. But it can also create problems that no human can solve.
“A.I. is really good at doing the task of coping the voices of famous people” Svoboda said “It’s getting harder to tell if it’s their actual voice, or if their voices are just A.I. being used. It might be used for our elections, to trick voters into believing something about the candidate.”
A.I. might affect our larger scale human activities, but it’s effects can be traced down to even the smallest of places and activities. Even at our school, A.I. will cause a monumental change.
“A.I. will be used by the students at school to escape basic work,” Svoboda said “ A.I. would be used to create essays eliminating most of the work. The only effort students would put in would be copying down what the A.I. has told them.”
Should world governments try to restrict A.I. to protect the civilian lifestyle and careers? Should world governments make sure A.I. won’t interfere with their own political systems by spreading misinformation?
“There should absolutely be restrictions on A.I.” Svoboda said. “ A.I. can be used for a lot of harmful things, but it can also be used for good. There need to be restrictions to control both.”
A.I. is perceived as an avid threat, and people know what it can do. It can be used as a tool for problems, an escape to get off doing work, and even an interference to our system of government. It would seem inevitable to have A.I. in our future in some way, and it would seem that controlling it would be the best option.
