With the holiday season quickly creeping up, we can expect a barrage of holiday movies to be constantly playing. This also comes with certain movies being overhyped and shoved in your face consistently through various means.
If you can’t guess what I’m referring to, it is Tim Burton’s 1993 movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Burton’s film has been heralded as one of the best seasonal movies with debates on whether it is a Halloween or Christmas movie.
Burton’s movie has withstood the test of time by being streamed around this time every year and being shown in movie theaters years later. Alongside this comes thousands of different forms of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” merchandise being shoved in consumer’s faces every year without fail.
Although it is an okay movie, the nonstop merchandise and ‘in your face-ness’ quickly make the movie seem overwhelming as well as overhyped. It is like the movie has turned into nothing but a cash grab for merchandise producers.
For example, at my job the one and only Michael’s craft stores, we carry “The Nightmare Before Christmas” perler beads and bracelet charms. We carry these items all through the year, not just during the holidays; even though it is for a holiday movie. The merchandise does get bought, but only during the holiday season then it goes back to gaining dust on the shelf. It is frankly ridiculous.
In general, most people who buy this merchandise have not seen the movie and only buy it because it is popular at the moment, in this case, the holiday season. Then, consumers quickly forget about the merch as soon as the holidays are over, which is a complete waste of their money.
This overhyped movie and merchandise being shoved in my face is a genuine nightmare and scarier than the movie ever was. We need to stop overhyping movies that in all honesty don’t deserve all the traction they get, and stop buying merch just because it is popular at the moment.
