Class committees around PLHS help their class grade and around the school. Sometimes all the work they do to support the school goes unnoticed, so here’s the surface of what the class committees do.
Seniors in the senior committee plan a lot of celebratory things for the final year, but the freshmen committee has things they plan too. The freshmen committee is smaller and has less to plan, but the freshmen committee is still trying to do things to benefit others.
“We are going to be having in November, our first annual book drive, so the students right now are working on their posters and we’re going to have drop-offs in the library…and we’re going to be donating them to the Lydia house,” the sponsor for the freshmen committee Sheryl Vansteenbergen said. “Then they talked about maybe doing some bell ringing during winter break and then with the sophomore class in February we do a replenish the pantry food drive.”
Being small doesn’t stop the freshmen committee, but it would be nice to get more involvement. There are fewer projects for the freshmen committee than for other committees, but there is room for more ideas.
“You have a hand in what your school is doing and so you can help out directly, if you have any ideas for fundraisers and things like that you can pitch it, and it’s just a good leadership opportunity as well,” freshman Sarah Erlbacher said. “You can find like-minded people there, people that are interested in leadership.”
Senior committee on the other hand has a lot of activities they plan. The senior committee plans the senior sunrise, barbeque, fundraisers, the senior class quote, and more.
The senior committee recently voted as a committee for their committee officers. The officers that were chosen were Ethan Logston, Brooklynn Hofer, Nova Degbe, and Avery Wolfe.
“It seemed like it would be I’d say honor, it’s an honor to be voted by my peers into one of these positions,” Logston said. “I think it would just both look really well on paper and it’d also be a great opportunity for me to expand my own abilities.”
Even though applying to get into the senior committee can seem daunting, it is rewarding to be inducted into the committee.
“We vote for the class president and vice president and those students on the day of graduation have different roles and and then they also in the future plan like class, alumni, reunions,” Wittrig said. “It’s a chance to not only, you know, have a memorable senior year, but just lay the foundation for reunions.”
No matter what grade or committee, the different grades of committees benefit the school with their work.
“It’s a great way to get involved in your class and I don’t know about everybody, but me personally, I love just being involved,” Logston said. “It’s a great way to make yourself a more well-rounded person, and you learn so many more skills working with other people and you’re building friendships because you might not know some of these people in the committee, but now you get to work alongside.”
