A traditional holiday since the year 1621, Thanksgiving is often celebrated with relatives. However, 403 years later, a new tradition seems to arise.
Empower HER holds a Friendsgiving event on November 21, 2024.
Co-founder of Empower HER, junior Aileen Ramos took part in setting up this event in order to show her gratitude for club members.
“It’s a good way to give thanks because I feel like I’m very grateful for the club. I am glad we started it this year,” Ramos said. “Even though it’s new, I am thankful for each person who still comes to every meeting.”
This way of giving thanks is a change, but it is very valuable to the many girls attending this Friendsgiving, including sophomore Bella Castro.
“Even if it isn’t a traditional Thanksgiving we’re still getting to hang out and celebrate Thanksgiving in a different way with your friends,” Castro said.
Empower HER always strives to hold fun occasions that will bring smiles to the members’ faces.
“A lot of girls met through Empower HER and I got to know a lot more people through Empower HER so it kind of just brings us all together,” Ramos said.
This alternative festivity can bring peers together to become friends, rather than only celebrating Thanksgiving as a family-oriented holiday.
“Normally you don’t do stuff like this because Thanksgiving is over break, so you’re with your family,” Castro said. “It’s nice to get to do something with your friends and people at your school.”
As Thanksgiving break comes closer, Empower HER’s Friendsgiving can serve as an example for others.
“It’s inspiring because other people could have a Friendsgiving as well and choose their own ways to celebrate with whoever they want to surround themselves with,” Ramos said.
