Sweaty palms, shaky voices, and the feeling of being watched occurs when on stage. The pressure is on when it comes to the PLHS choir as they compete for first place.
The competition started bright and early as they all had arrived at 5:00 A.M for warmups to make sure they were prepared and ready.
Molly Silknitter, a freshman, who has just joined choir and decided to start doing the competitions as well. “It went well except for all of the waiting,” Molly said. “But other than that it was fun.”
Competitions have helped bring students out of their comfort zones and distracted them from when life gets hard. Julia Rasmussen, a freshman that also participated in the competition and has been doing them since last year. “Competitions have really helped me have something to look forward to,” Julia said. “especially if I’m going through something and I need to take my mind off of it.”
The stats of the competition ended with the Varsity group “Spirit” getting first place, the all guys group “Monarchy” getting second place, and the group “Heart and Soul” did not place.
“I was a little upset that my group did not place,” Molly said. “But I’m still happy that the two other groups did well considering how hard they worked for it.”
A lot of the songs the group members sang ended up being mashups of different songs, those songs were Good Morning/Another One Rides the Bus, Good Thing/ Final Countdown, and Show Choir/Hair Up. “The songs were really hard to learn,” Julia said. “In the end though we all sounded amazing! The hard work was worth it.”
Friendships are often made in different classes and putting yourself out there even if it can be lonely at first.
“I joined the competition alone, not really having any friends going into it,” Molly said. “I’m glad I did it and in the end I made a close friend.”
People clapping, cheering, and celebrating. The sweat on the palms is gone, voices have gone steady, and the feeling of eyes being on you isn’t so bad after all.
