For choir kids singing is a big part of their everyday lives, so when a new opportunity presents itself, some of them would take that chance to be even more involved.
District Music Contest, or DMC, is a competition typically held within a certain district where kids can participate with a song or an ensemble and get judged and scored on what they present. For PLHS the kids involved in choir who choose to do it will be competing on April 26.
All grades are welcome to participate in DMC, but each student still has their differences.
Freshman Caylee Wohlers, who is singing Greensleeves by Phillip Kern said, “This is only my second year in choir, but I like to sing so I am nervous and excited at the same time.”
Some seniors who are participating already have some experience in performing in both DMC and other choir related activities.
“This is my fourth year participating,” senior Olivia Urbach said. “I do DMC, Free Spirit, Concert Choir, Advanced Treble and AV.”
Learning a song and trying to make it as perfect as possible within two months takes more work than some people might assume.
“I sing my song every day after school for thirty minutes and I also practiced every Friday in school,” Wohlers said.
Other students have diverse ways to help train their voice and learn how to let their voice grow when participating in choir activities.
“I do voice lessons with Mrs. Ussery, or I have a private voice teacher that I see sometimes, and I search really hard to find videos on YouTube of accompaniment tracks,” Urbach said.
Students who are not in fine arts may have the question of why kids in choir would want to have so much on their plate, especially when it takes some work.
“I like doing choir related things because it is a good way to cope with stress and I also find it really fun,” Wohlers said.
When already being so passionate about something in high school, students start to consider it for their long-term career.
“I want to teach choir related things, because I am going to college to be a music teacher next year and I want to be as involved as I can so I can be as prepared as I can,”
Their love for music runs deep, and through every note, practice, and performance, these choir students show that their passion for the fine arts is more than just a hobby—it is a way of life.
