Papio Proud believes that without diversity, the world would be dull. By learning from one another, students help build a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and proud of who they are.
More than ever new students are getting involved, engaging with people from different backgrounds, and gaining new perspectives.
“It’s the students who show interest and take the time to understand other cultures who truly make a difference,” Sasha Okereke said.
Events are held to celebrate traditions, honor loved ones, and bring communities together to share meaningful and memorable experiences.
“On October 23rd we are going to set up ofrendas for the day of the dead with candles, flags, and flowers to honor our loved ones,” sophomore Lora Hindman said.
The club is an empowering group that not only brings people together but also offers an opportunity to learn about their identity and appreciate the cultures of others.
“My sister was a big inspiration. It was a safe zone in school where we try to be the support students can use that brings us together,” Hindman said.
The club is an empowering group that not only brings people together but also gives them the opportunity to teach their own culture.
“As a group the mission is to get people interested and involved in the differences in our world while creating a positive environment where everyone feels welcome and supported,” Hindman said.
Being in the club has changed the perspective of individuals by helping them understand how every culture plays a role in shaping our world today.
“America wouldn’t be where it is today. Each culture has brought innovation, creativity, and a variety of experiences that make our country stronger,” Hindman said.
Promoting diversity can be challenging because it is complex. Its impact goes beyond what can be physically displayed.
“The club is bigger than any poster as the purpose of the club goes far beyond what can be visually displayed,” Hindman said.
