Creating Clue

With sets to build, scripts to memorize, and a murder mystery to solve PLHS drama club sets into the creation of the world of Clue. As the days are counted down to October 21st and 22nd; the days the PLHS drama club will perform Clue to an audience, others have to wonder what it is like to be the people working behind the scenes to create the intriguing play we will get to watch this late fall.

There are many reasons someone would have to get involved with play production, whether the reason be because they knew someone who is already involved, wanted something to do in their spare time, or accidentally put their name on a sign up sheet not knowing what it was for.

“To get involved more in school activities,” Junior Maddie Fairman said.

There are many different jobs to have in play pro. that go into the making of a play or musical. Each job or set of jobs has its own crew. The crews are in charge of the different tasks for setting up the play like collecting props, building the set, or controlling the lighting and sound effects.

“I am the light and sound crew head,” Fairman said. “A little props and sets but mostly light and sound design.”

The places the crews work on their tasks differ from each other depending on what job the crew has. These places are where the crews make and find their materials.

“For light and sound we are in the booth up in the back of the auditorium,” Fairman said. “Our booth or cat walk has the majority of our materials.”

It takes many hours a week to get to where they are when the play is performed for an audience. Sometimes if you have a class related to working on the play, you spend an hour every school day working, or you just come in after school or on weekends and put in a few hours a week. With all these hours being spent working, it is good to get a grasp on how the members of the drama club feel about the play.

“I think it will be amazing,” Junior Jasper Christian said. “We have a great theater program and our show always leaves a smile on people’s faces and gives them something to talk about.”

Different people impact the play and the whole group in different ways depending on the mood people give others and the amount of work people put into making the play.

“Well I give a different color to the play with all the sound effects going on during it,” Fairman said. “And as a whole group we all give a light to the stage (literally) as we light it up.”

Whereas Christian has a whole other idea of what to do.

“I am a go to the back-up plan, kind of person,” Christian said.

Drama club is always an interesting activity to join in on. Someone might  find their type of people or the job they want to do in the future just by joining and being part of something bigger than yourself.

“Don’t be afraid to try new things, it’s unlikely not to find something that you’re not interested in,” Christian said. “The people are always welcoming and create a great environment to be in.”

Being part of play production and drama club as a whole is a different world than watching a play being performed. It is so much more than doing a job just to get something done. It is the friends you make, the inspiration it causes, and the way a person can learn from their choices and become more responsible as a person. Being part of PLHS drama club is a growing experience and a fun use of someone’s time, that they can look back at in twenty years and see how that affected them as a person.
