Preparing for the Papio South Game

The most anticipated game of the season. One town, two schools. This rivalry match is guaranteed to gain a huge, loud crowd.

Every year, the day before and the day of the big match up, both players and coaches start feeling the adrenaline that comes with playing in important games, especially against the cross town rival, Papillion LaVista South.

Senior defensive specialist Regan Beckenhauer can’t wait to play in the rivalry game of her final volleyball season here at Papillion LaVista.

“I am super excited to play with my team,” Beckenhauer said. “We really know how to build off of each other’s energy and just have fun out on the court,”

All the anticipation and nervous and excited energy that comes on game days can sometimes be overwhelming, even more on rivalry game days. Since it’s a very important match, players must find ways to keep calm and make it through the school day while still mentally preparing.

“I will be able to keep calm and not get too nervous throughout the day by telling myself to play calm and relaxed,” Beckenhauer said. “To overall have fun and enjoy every moment.”

Sophomore Lillian Vitera has her own personalized ways to prepare for game days as well.

“I do my physical therapy exercises,” Vitera said. “I also do breathing sessions before the game to help me stay relaxed.”

Along with the energetic student section, family and friends, the pep band will be playing, making the atmosphere in the gym even more intense.

“There will be a lot more people there than usual,”Beckenhauer said. “Especially since this game is our rivalry game, it’s going to be super loud.”

The Monarchs volleyball team has a lot to look forward to for this special match up, playing together as a team and enjoying the game.

“I’m just excited to play our rivals and work hard as a team to be our best,” Vitera said. “No matter the outcome.”
