The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming. This can only mean one thing, the seasons are changing and spring is right around the corner.

Spring sports are starting for the student athletes at PLHS, but some of them are doing more than just a high school sport they are also doing a club sport outside of school.

Some of the options for spring sports for PLHS are track, soccer, girls tennis, boys golf, and baseball. While some of these sports are harder and involve more skills than others, all the athletes still have to put in time and effort.

“I’m starting my second year of track,” Junior Kylie Gilbert said. “We practice after school Monday through Friday every week,” Gilbert said.

Sophomore Lilly Pillay is playing tennis for the high school but is also trying to balance playing volleyball for a club team as well.

“Sometimes when I have back to back practices it can be tough to try and get my homework done but I always manage,” Pillay said.

Many athletes start playing their sports at a young age and continue with it for most of their youth, but even playing a sport for a few years can really grow and become a top priority for some athletes.

“I’ve been playing volleyball for 11 years,” Gilbert said. “But track is starting to become my favorite sport even though I haven’t done it that long.”

While track is becoming Gilbert’s favorite sport Pillay still prefers volleyball over tennis even though it’s becoming closer than she thought.

“ I’ve been playing volleyball for a long time so I’ll always love it more,” Pillay said. “But tennis is starting to grow on me a lot more as well.”

The school year is very long and with spring sports being the last set of sports throughout the year it can feel like an eternity waiting to play them.

“I love tennis, it’s so relaxing and it seems like forever until I get to competitively play it for the high school,” Pillay said.

Playing two sports at the same time can be very complicated and can lead to a lot of conflicts between them.

“I have volleyball every weekend,” Gilbert said. “I try not to miss any track meets that happen on the weekends. It can be very difficult however.”

While listening to the birds and seeing the beautiful sun again these athletes will be  enjoying the warm weather while competing in their spring sports for PLHS.
