Dodgeball for a Cause

DECA hosts their annual dodgeball tournament to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

This event is the one time students can throw things at each other without facing serious consequences.

On September 27, DECA hosted their annual dodgeball tournament. The DECA dodgeball tournament is a competition where teams are able to sign up and compete against each other for a chance to become champions. All are welcome to join this event, even if they are not a member of DECA. Proceeds from the dodgeball tournament went to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The tournament is organized by DECA leadership, like senior DECA officer Sam Jose. They were tasked with setting rules for the tournament such as creating a time limit, boundaries, and headshot disqualifications. Their efforts allowed for a coordinated tournament.

Seven student teams and one staff team joined the competition this year. The teams played against each other in a double elimination bracket in games lasting five minutes each.

“Each game provided excitement, drama, and craziness which all together made it such an amazing night,” Jose said.

The fast paced games made for a lively tournament for teams and spectators alike.

“The gym was electric throughout the night, providing fuel for the players and entertainment for the viewers,” Jose said.

Even though there was an ultimate champion in this tournament, there was more to this competition than winning.

“Despite [my team’s] lack of success, it was still fun,” senior Carson Ahlers said. “It was for a good cause and I got to relieve my anger.”

The dodgeball tournament is just one of the many exciting events that DECA has to offer. The tournament is important in bringing recognition to the club.

“It is one of the times where DECA receives so much attention outside of the existing members,” Jose said. “Continuously doing these events can attract spectators of the events to join DECA.”

In the future, DECA plans to continue the tradition of the dodgeball tournament along with hosting additional activities like pumpkin decorating and DECA volleyball.
