Once a year, 38 countries, 7,612 schools and 940,000 french speaking students from around the world vote in a March Madness style French music competition called “Manie Musicale.” The contest gives students studying French to exposure to a variety of music and artists from around the world.
Through the competition students are able to foster a deeper understanding of life in other countries beyond the language they speak. The lyrics and videos give students a glimpse into life across the world.
“It gives me an insight to what people really listen to,” sophomore Kari Lindseth said.
Manie Musicale does more than just teach students about French culture, it helps bring together students across the globe from one another.
“I think what’s most important about when they listen and make the comparisons is that the French are more like us than they are not, we all like the same music,” French Teacher Mrs. Halligan said.
During Manie Musicale students are able to listen to new songs they love from around the world. The competition gives students the chance to expand their knowledge of French and global music at the same time.
“Kids tell me I have these on my playlist,” Halligan said. “Its kinda neat,”
For new French students, Manie Musicale gives them a chance to become more exposed to the language, as well as put new language skills to use
“Listening to these songs, you realize that there is a lot more you can understand even this early on,” junior Jenna Scasny said.
Manie Musicale offers students a chance to listen and learn about new music from many different countries from around the globe. Students are able to practice both listening and speaking skills while also expanding their knowledge of modern french culture. The competition can give french students of all levels to connect through shared musical preferences.
