With the year coming to a close, many clubs are beginning to wind down until the fall. This, however, is not the case for the students in Student Council.
These students strategize the best way to maintain their position in Student Council as they apply and campaign for votes.
While some students sit back, relax and hope the votes go their way, junior Estelle Anderson takes a different approach.
“I handed out Dum Dums to juniors the day before the election and I also hung up a few posters around the school,” Anderson said. “My strategy was to advertise myself and to not think about judgement. It was a little embarrassing to have to ask people to vote for me, but you can’t really be successful without putting yourself out there. So I did.”
For others, like junior Zack Carlson, their campaigning process was more laid-back.
“I didn’t do much to campaign publicly,” Carlson said. “I told some friends and other people to vote but I didn’t make posters or post anything.”
While Carlson’s strategy may seem like a long shot, he is prepared to let his dedication speak for itself.
“My strategy was to rely on letting people vote without campaigning,” Carlson said. “I knew that if I were to get on the staff, it would be based on my experience and letting other people decide.”
With election results on the horizon, Anderson is hopeful her hard work will pay off.
“I’m excited to set up homecoming again and pick themes for spirit week,” Anderson said. “I also enjoy decorating the student council bulletin board as it gives me a chance to be creative.”
Regardless of his different campaigning strategy, Carlson shares this hope of being elected onto next year’s staff.
“Student Council is very important to me. As a member for multiple years, I love being a part of the culture and giving back to the community and our school,” Carlson said. “It also is very cool to see how students can come together and be a part of something that changes the lives of others.”
