PLHS Good Standing Rules

The new school year of 2023 brought many new rules to PLHS. Many students from all grades have great opinions on one particular rule.
Homecoming is many students’ favorite part of the year, taking away the ability to go would be a tragedy.
“I think if all of someone’s grades were F’s then maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to go,” Sophomore Chloe Seaton said. “But a couple shouldn’t, people could be struggling in classes.”
One immense rule from the Good Standing policy is that you must be passing at least four classes. Seaton believes not everyone is able to have outstanding grades.
“Some students obviously can’t help being gone from school,” Sophomore Bella Weiss said. “But others who don’t care don’t put in the effort.”
Missing school is another big part of the Good Standing policy. The two sophomores agree when it comes to the two big rules for Homecoming.
“They definitely could have made it less harsh – without ruining someone’s fun,” Weiss said. “Homecoming means a lot to some people.”
When it comes to how important school activities are, is making rules so people can’t go really going to make the High School experience fun?
“They could’ve changed up the rules,” Seaton said. “I think they should only let bad students not go, not all students try to be late or have bad grades.”
Although these rules were enforced, students could always just try again for the next activity coming up.
“You can’t have the real high school experience if you don’t go to any of the dances,” Seaton said.
The students of PLHS could have very strong opinions on the rules that are implemented. Even if the rules would be very easy to follow – there are always ‘what if’s.’
“It’s not fair to some students if they can’t make it to the first period on time,” Seaton said. “It could be their ride’s fault.”
The appropriate way to take care of the students who miss a large amount of school or have failing grades is to talk to them personally, because some could have it worse than others.
“I think they did it to keep people in order,” Weiss said.
They wouldn’t be getting as many students going as earlier years, nor would they be getting as much money from the tickets.
“I believe it’s wrong because of how important it is to so many people,” Weiss said.
In the end, many students think the rules could be drastically changed or less harsh.
