As winter sports come to an end and the snow melts away, spring golf comes back alive. At Papillion-La Vista High School, student-athletes start to head back onto the course for golf tryouts. As golf tryouts start to begin, many golf veterans such as seniors Jacob Feekin and Wyatt Groves prepare beforehand to secure their spots in the lineup and possibly a starting spot for varsity.
¨I make sure to play at the same source we were having tryouts at the weekend before,¨ Groves said. ¨Before I also made sure to do a lot of putting and chipping practice before to get comfortable with the greens speeds.¨
Although golf requires many skills with the sport like knowing how to use certain clubs, it also requires a tough mental game to come back to after a bad hole.
¨I know that bad holes are going to happen but I just try to manage them so i can still come back from them,¨ Feekin said. ¨I always tell myself that it’s just a game and that the most important shot is the next shot and that if i mentally forget about it that the next shot will be much better.¨
Even though many seniors understand what they will get put through for try outs, the course can alter their chances from making to not making the team.
¨Now the hardest part is just dealing with the poor conditions of the golf courses this time of the year.¨ Feekin said. ¨ Since we walk around the whole course it can really change your score for the day, like if it had rained the day before or snowed even can affect your season.¨
As the senior golfers prepare for their final season as seniors, they know that all the hours spent on the green are paying off. For some, this season will mark the end of their golf career, but for others, the journey towards golfing in college is just beginning.
