Countless years, several job interviews, a whole team relying on you. Are the lights too bright?
Monarch Wrestling has ended their search to find a new coach, deciding on former assistant coach Curtis Miller. While he might have a new job description, players do not think the upcoming season will be much different.
“I think practice will be different but stuff will mostly stay the same,” sophomore Michael Garmin said.
With his prior experience as an assistant, coach Miller has already left an impression on some of the wrestlers returning next season. Those bonds will be important for the team’s success.
“Last year he was our assistant coach but worked with the light guys a lot,” junior Keegan Ferracci said. “I was close with him.”
Getting a new coach can be hard on any group of athletes, but the wrestling team does not seem to feel that way.
“I think having a new coach will be very beneficial for my overall skillset and getting better in certain positions,” Ferracci said.
Since many wrestlers already know the coach, players believe the transition into the season will be easier for the team.
“He gets our mindsets better,” Garman said. “I’m looking forward to really just getting back to wrestling and having fun.”
Some hope that a new coach can give the team a final push towards the state tournament, helping them get a leg up when they previously may have failed.
“I’m looking forward to winning matches and getting better,” Ferracci said.
