The Show Choir Experience

James Rasser holds his necklace and kneels to thank everyone he loves before he has to tuck it away, this helps him get in the stage mindset. Rasser can hear the crowd cheering, he takes a deep breath and steps on to the stage to start the show.

There is a lot of inspiration for being in a show choir. Dance Captain, Senior James Rasser got inspired by the music.

“I really had an interest in music in elementary school so I figured why not try it,” Rasser said. “I only found more reasons to love it as I joined middle school show choir and high school show choir.”

Bass Vocal Captain, Senior Levi Widdowson didn’t think of being in show choir in middle school, but that changed in high school.

“I have done show choir all 4 years of highschool,” Widdowson said. “I started my freshman year because I didn’t like the idea of doing choir in middle school.”

Some people live show choir, Rasser has been doing show choir for almost a decade.

“I’ve done choir and show choir since fourth grade, so nine years,” Rasser said.

Rasser really enjoys it, just like anyone would like focusing on football season during the fall.

“Show choir is something that takes a lot of time, focus, and effort,” Rasser said. “I enjoy getting to do something that takes up so much time, focus and effort just like anyone that loves to play football or volleyball.”

After all of the time spent preparing for show choir season it is finally here, it is time to go to competitions.

“My favorite competition was Lincoln East,” Brooklynn Hofer said. “It was the first time we had won grand champions and we were all excited, we did not expect it.”

Some people have different opinions on their favorite competitions, mainly because of the experience.

“My favorite competition was definitely when we went to Sioux Falls last year and got to stay overnight in South Dakota,” Rasser said. “Lots of fun memories were made and we had tons of success at that competition where we swept the awards.”

With the competition comes the mindset of the show choir members.

“My favorite part about the show choir is that we get to compete, a lot of us say that it’s not a good mindset to be in, but I enjoy it,” Rasser said. “There aren’t many opportunities to use the arts as a competition and I’m a competitive person.”

After so many years with experience of show choir, Rasser talks about the advice he would give to younger fine arts students.

“Don’t be afraid to express yourself on stage,” Rasser said. “The art of performance includes making creative decisions and the worst thing you can do is shy away from your creativity and not be expressive, so go for it!”

Show choir is something that people can express themselves with and it brings people out of their comfort zone. It takes a lot to go and get onto the stage and perform in front of hundreds of people. Never hide your talents, it’s always better to unleash your creativity.
